Everything you need to know about the OLOL Middle School

Introducing our new Vice-Principal

Mrs. Kara Lawrence

I have been an educator for the past ten years.  I began my career at the University of New Hampshire as a history instructor.  Subsequently, I taught at several other colleges including Massasoit Community College and Becker College.  In 2015, I transitioned to teaching in secondary education.  I taught in the Social Studies department at Coyle and Cassidy for three years before becoming the Department Chair in the Spring of 2018.  As a department chair, I was responsible for overseeing the curriculum for grades 5-12, supervising teachers within the department, and serving on the leadership board.  I hold a BA with Honors and a Master’s Degree in History from Binghamton University.  I also attended Bridgewater State University and completed a Post-Baccalaureate program to become licensed to teach Social Studies in grades 5-12 in the state of Massachusetts.  My family are active members of Annunciation of the Lord parish in Taunton.

“It is with great pleasure that I take on the responsibility of helping to create an exciting and engaging learning environment for middle school students at Our Lady of Lourdes.”

  • Tuition / Registration / FACTS

    • Grade 5 – $4,590 plus $100 fundraising fee and $175 book fee = $4,865
    • Grades 6-8 – $6,800 plus $100 fundraising fee and $175 book fee = $7,075

The registration process is very easy. We will ask you to complete a simple online form, and we will follow up at a later date with other forms you may need to complete.  There is no need to request transcripts as all records will follow your child to OLOL.

OLOL uses the FACTS Tuition Management System.  Families need to change the school of choice for their child and can do this easily at this link: https://online.factsmgt.com/signin/3GJ1F

  • Uniforms / Classrooms / School Hours

Students transitioning from Coyle and Cassidy Middle School will be allowed to wear their current uniforms. As they purchase new shirts, the logo on the shirt will eventually change to Our Lady of Lourdes.

OLOL uses Donnelly’s for our uniform company. A link will be added to the OLOL Donnelly website with a distinction between the elementary and middle school uniform for those who will need to purchase uniforms for the 2020/2021 school year.

The OLOL Middle School will be located on the second floor of the OLOL building, while also utilizing other spaces in the building as necessary, so that there is least disruption when the students change classes. Moreover, we recognize that this age of student has different needs when it comes to socialization, responsibility, and accountability; thus, we intend to provide the middle school students with the appropriate space so they feel as though they are the leaders of the school.

    School Hours

Our Lady of Lourdes will be moving to a Tier II school. The school day will begin at 8:20 and end at 2:35. The Before School Program will begin at 7:00 and the After School Program will run from 2:35 to 5:30.

The Pre-K school hours will remain the same.

The Before School Program begins at 7:00 AM, and the After School Program runs from 3:00 to 5:30 PM. The cost for the extended school day is $2 per half hour.

  • Drop-off and Pick-up / Bus / Lunch

    Drop-off and Pick-up Process

Parents may continue to park across the street and walk their children to school if they wish to do so. A ‘drop off only’ line will also be available in front of the school (separate from marked bus drop-off) with staff available to monitor/supervise the children.

    Bus Transportation

Bus transportation for Taunton residents will continue to be available. We are working with the city of Taunton to finalize the details.

Once we have the names and addresses of the children requiring bus transportation, this information will be sent to the bus company.

An expansion of our hot lunch program is under development, to ensure appropriate lunch options are available for middle schoolers.

  • Curriculum / Specials

We are pleased to announce that Mrs. Ellen Russell will continue to support OLOL’s STEM curriculum – both at the elementary and middle school levels, and we are very excited to learn of the amazing additions she is planning for the upcoming school year!  STEM will continue to be a focus of the Middle School curriculum and we anticipate leveraging the Makerspace equipment at OLOL as well.

Qualified OLOL 8th grade students will have the opportunity to take Honors Algebra I and Spanish I for high school credit at Bishop Connolly.

The highly talented Middle School faculty will continue to build upon the rigorous and challenging curriculum that has been developed at Coyle and Cassidy Middle School.  This curriculum has been designed in collaboration with Coyle and Cassidy High School, ensuring excellent preparation for high school academics.

In addition to their core academic classes, students will continue to participate in specials including art, music, library/study hall and physical education.

  • Special Education

    Special Education

Students with IEP or 504 accommodation plans will continue to receive special education services at Our Lady of Lourdes.  Other students who require support to meet their individual learning needs will still be eligible for assistance as well.

  • Social Emotional Needs

    Social/Emotional Needs

OLOL utilizes the services of St. Vincent’s to provide counseling to students and families in need.

We also have Dahyana Schlosser as a resource. Please contact Mary Turner if a referral is needed.

  • Sports / Extra-curricular Activities

    Sports Activities

We are very excited to have the opportunity to build a strong middle school athletic program at Our Lady of Lourdes.  We look forward to making announcements about sports offerings, and bringing our students and families into this process, in the weeks ahead.

    Extracurricular Activities

As our middle school transitions to a new home, our students can expect continuity in extracurricular activities. The Middle School Student Council will transition to OLOL. In addition, membership in the National Junior Honor Society will transfer from Coyle and Cassidy’s chapter to a new chapter at Our Lady of Lourdes, and we will continue to induct new members into this prestigious society each year.

We will work to facilitate participation in Bishop Connolly activities, such as the drama and music programs, for interested students, while also working to build offerings in these areas at our school.

  • Transitioning to Bishop Connolly

    Transitioning to Bishop Connolly

All OLOL Middle School students will automatically be accepted to Bishop Connolly High School without the need for a placement exam.

We look forward to arranging opportunities for middle schoolers, especially 7th and 8th graders, to travel to Bishop Connolly for STEM programs and other activities, both to provide enrichment for our students and to build connections between our schools.

Students who enroll in the Bishop Connolly L.E.A.P. Program are eligible to transfer to OLOL’s 8th grade if the L.E.A.P. program is not a good fit.
